Uninor launches mobile service in India, call charges at 29 paisa per minute

Uninor, a Norwegian-Indian joint venture, today became the latest entrant in the country's highly competitive mobile telephony market, where it would offer GSM services at rates as low as 29 paisa per minute. Uninor is the first among those who were offered licences last year to launch services. It will be operating in seven circles. "The company has launched operations in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh East and West, and Bihar including Jharkhand," Telenor Group CEO and President Jon Fredrik Baksaas said. Uninor is a JV between Norway's Telenor and India's Unitech. The network of Uninor will cover a national footprint of close to 600 million subscribers from day one, he said. To find its bearing in the cut-throat market, the company introduced two tariff plans. 'Talkmore@29 paisa' would allow users to make calls at 29 paisa a minute and STD (national long distance) calls at 49 paisa a minute. The other plan 'Callmore @ 29

India may soon have 11 digit Mobile Numbers

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has amended the National Numbering Plan to introduce 11-digit mobile numbers in the country. The current 10-digit numbers are likely to be inadequate to accommodate the growing new subscriber additions. In an internal note, dated November 26, 2009, DoT says, "The National Numbering Plan 2003 is amended for migration to 11-digit numbering plan in mobile services by prefixing digit '9' in existing two-digit PLMN Access Code." The mobile number has three components of numbering -- PLMN code, MSC code and subscriber number. The regulator wants another digit to be added to the PLMN code, which, at present, is a two-digit code. MSC code is a three-digit number, while subscriber number is a five digit code. DoT, which had planned to introduce 11-digit numbers in April this year, wants operators to migrate to the 11-digit ecosystem by January 2010. However, it remains to be seen if operators would be able to migrate to new numbering plan at a s
