Check whether your Mobile carries Genuine IMEI number

Handsets that comes with fake or no IMEI (Chinese mostly) is likely to go dead by December 1st as per directives issued by TRAI (Telecom regulatory Authority of India). As per TRAI’s notice, all the Indian mobile service providers are strictly ordered not to carry calls from all handsets not having genuine IMEI numbers or the ones with no IMEI with effect from 1st December 2009.

So check out whether your mobile carries a genuine IMEI number else you have to implant a genuine IMEI number by December 1st to enjoy uninterrupted cellular service.

Step to check IMEI number in your mobile.

IMEI, also known as International Mobile Equipment Identity is a 15 digit numeric code used to identify each mobiles. You can check the IMEI number of your mobile phone by dialling *#06# from the handset.

Steps to check the validity of an IMEI number.

After locating your IMEI number, if you are not sure if it is a genuine or fake IMEI, then you can check it out using either of the 2 ways mentioned below:
  1. Simply send an SMS to 53232 with the keywords “IMEI{space}{15 Digit IMEI No.}
    For Ex. send “IMEI 123456789123456″ to 53232
  2. The validity of an IMEI can also be checked online by visiting this page

India may soon have 11 digit Mobile Numbers

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has amended the National Numbering Plan to introduce 11-digit mobile numbers in the country. The current 10-digit numbers are likely to be inadequate to accommodate the growing new subscriber additions. In an internal note, dated November 26, 2009, DoT says, "The National Numbering Plan 2003 is amended for migration to 11-digit numbering plan in mobile services by prefixing digit '9' in existing two-digit PLMN Access Code." The mobile number has three components of numbering -- PLMN code, MSC code and subscriber number. The regulator wants another digit to be added to the PLMN code, which, at present, is a two-digit code. MSC code is a three-digit number, while subscriber number is a five digit code. DoT, which had planned to introduce 11-digit numbers in April this year, wants operators to migrate to the 11-digit ecosystem by January 2010.
